Tagmap workshops in East London

Becca and I went down to St Hildas Community centre in Bethnal Green along with ex Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq to talk to young people about issues that affect them. The project is called Tagmap and it’s about getting young Muslims to talk about their perspectives on current events and what they relate to.

We started the workshop off with a brainstorm of all the things that we would like to address and talk about in the workshop. I think this helped them to open up more and to express views that aren’t normally shared. The main part of the workshop was getting the girls to film themselves talking about what they thought was important and felt needed to be told. The conversations were broad and included issues around identity, the media, the Muslim and non-Muslim community and generational differences. It’s not often that young people are asked such questions so to find out what they thought helped me to build my own perspective on things.

The responses were then uploaded on to our website: tagmap.wordpress.com

Young people can view the videos on the website and agree or disagree also leave their comments. I think this is a great way interacting with other people and finding out what they think about issues that affect them.

I have just finished leading a really cool project for Redbridge.

It was a really inspiring project and I really enjoyed it.

What I did:

The project consisted of 5 workshops with the Muslim Youth Project.

The workshops were really fun, we carried out a range of ways using film and media to engage the young people and find out their stories and experiences.

Outcome:

With the Young people we designed a fantastic magazine. The young people came up with the name U-Turn and the magazine focused around their U-Turn moments. The magazine was designed to help engage and inform other young people to do good in their community.

It was a great project and I am sad it is over.
