Adobe Youth Voices @ Body & Soul – Final Workshops
Posted by Hannah in Animation, Graphics, Illustration
For six weeks now, Ben has been running his Adobe Youth Voices sessions at Body & Soul and now, sadly, they have drawn to an end.

The time seems to have flown by, but we have all really enjoyed it, and hopefully learnt a lot about photoshop, and attempting to teach a class of teenagers!
The last 4 weeks have taken us from the initial pen sketches to laptops, and you can see the wicked illustrations that the kids came up with! Watch this space for future talents!!

The hardest part of learning Photoshop was getting to grips with using layers, their importance, and why you bother!!!

Even more praise to the guys, as using Photoshop on a touch pad on a laptop is pretty tough, and half of them hadn’t used a mac before either, so there were lots of things to get to grips with in our hourly sessions!
The kids at Body & Soul have been amazing, and levels of talent have varied, but we have been really impressed by how quickly a lot of them picked stuff up!

A Note from our Newest Team Member:
Hello!

I’m Helen, 26 and the newest member to join team Bold.
I am currently working at Bold developing lots of new and exciting projects.

I’m an animation director and make films using different media such as paper cut outs, 2D drawing and taxidermy rabbits.
My graduation film uses live action/stop motion/pixilation and focuses on the serious subject of pet death, entitled ‘Goodbye Mr Pink.’
I’m a bit of a movie buff and especially like 80’s films such as The Goonies and Labyrinth.
My passion is storytelling and working with new people, I am always up for the next challenge!
Check out my blog to see more of my work and write ups of my experiences at Bold.

At Bold Creative, we are all really excited to be involved in The Day Project. The team took their first step towards creating the ground breaking graphic novel last week.
We worked with a small group to start collecting stories of their experiences of HIV. Everyone stepped up to the challenge bravely as they interviewed each other about major points in their lives affected by the condition, from taking medication, to chatting up girls, to explaining the situation to family members…
Read ALL about the project, keep up to date, and have the opportunity to get involved here http://thedayproject.org.uk/

We were back at Body and Soul again this Thursday for our second workshop!
Ben got the group to start thinking about their characters.
Last week he asked all the kids to bring in something they felt resembled their character, or something that was important to them!
We had a mixed response from the guys that remembered, from fried chicken, through 1920s art deco lamps, to the Justin Burber album, and Ben’s dragonball z wallet!!
Once we had gone round and asked all the guys about their things, it was time to start some actual drawing!!

Ben had brought in a bunch of illustrations, some of his own work, and a collection of children’s books, to get the guys thinking about the style possibilities when coming up with a character.
Using this and the object for inspiration, they had to start to create a character of themselves.
The results were extremely varied, one massive afro, a grandma’s cardigan, a foxes mask, a chicken bone in the head.
In general we were impressed with how the guys got stuck in to the drawing and really enjoyed themselves!
Finally, after they had finished doing their own characters they passed them around and the guys had to have a go at interpreting what other people had drawn of themselves in their own styles!
This was another amusing game and helped understand different styles and gave the opportunity to add extra characteristics you felt they left, which could be anything from a saying to an extra arm borrowed from an octopus!
We had a ton of fun again and look forward to going back again this Thursday!!

On Thursday Evening we went back to Body & Soul for the first Adobe Youth Voices workshop…
Ben is leading the sessions every Thursday for the next six weeks!

The aim is to teach participants how to draw, create interesting characters and how to use Adobe photoshop as an aid to make those characters look amazing and finished to a professional standard.
This was the first session so, after filling up on some delicious dinner, we spent this time really getting to know one another, the group are a great bunch of kids, and i think it is safe to say we all had a lot of fun!
Ben started with an ice breaker, getting us all to think of our favourite film and get the rest of the group to guess what it was without saying the name! Some were a lot easier that others!!
Next we played a game to get us thinking about characteristics, which would help the guys to develop their own characters. You had to first think of 10 for yourself, and then 5 for another member of the group! Again this had some very humorous results, and some members of the group had ALOT more to say than others! Ben was a popular target for the second part!

Finally we ended the session by playing the game (we had a lot of fun and games this time round) where you take it in turns to all draw a part of the body!

As you can see we had some interesting results! We’re all looking forward to going back again next Thursday where we will begin more drawing and individual character development!

Everyone at Bold Creative is in high spirits this week after winning a BAFTA for our “See Something Say Something” short film made for Nickelodeon about child bullying.
We all had a great night hanging out with Dick and Dom from Da Bungalow, Catherine Tate, and Richard Hammond!
Thanks to all the young people who took part and shared their experiences because without them this would not be possible!! This is a great team effort that everyone can be proud of! WAHOO!!
Martin, Greg and Jane discuss See Something Say Something minutes after winning the BAFTA!
And here is the animation that won us the prize!

Yesterday I finished adding sound FX and music to an animation Ben and me have been working on recently for T-Mobile. It’s a minute and a half short that joins others in the series of animations Bold have created for the online anti-bullying campaign “TXT UP”. It’s called “Molly’s Story” and we have tried to bring her story to life in a visually clean, abstract world of animation very loosely inspired by a bunch of illustrated posters we stumbled upon like “Jeremyville” mentioned a few posts back.
Here’s how it turned out:
